Micro Dwarf and Dwarf Tomatoes
Micro-dwarfs are very low-growing varieties about 8 to 16 inches high. Also known as “kitchen tomatoes” or “pot tomatoes”. They grow with very sturdy stems and hardly need any support. Perfect for growing indoors with extra light during the winter and spring. Fits very well in small pots on the windowsill. Also suitable to grow as a row in front of higher-growing varieties. No pruning is needed. Most colors can be found. Normally the fruit size is a cherry tomato or a larger cherry tomato.
Dwarf varieties are normally semi-determinate, but also determinate and indeterminate varieties occur. They grow with more sturdy stems, compared to indeterminate vining varieties and bush varieties. The height is normally about 40 inches but varies from 16 to 60 inches. They normally need staking or support of some kind, tomato cages could be a good choice. No pruning is needed. Dwarf Tree-type is a characteristic often found in dwarf varieties. That means the growth habit is like a small, sturdy tree, instead of a bush. You can find all different kinds of fruit sizes, types, and colors.
Tiny Tim Tomato (Micro-Dwarf)
Tiny Tim comes from the research efforts of the University of Hampshire of Durham, as a cross between Window Box and Red Currant. This extremely productive, bush like plant produces multitudes of tiny red cherry tomatoes. This heirloom was first introduced to the public in 1962.
Vilma Tomato (Micro-Dwarf)
Vilma is a red-fruited micro-dwarf tomato. It has tender skin, which is a plus for eating, although one has to be careful with watering to avoid cracking. The fruits are sweeter than the other red micro-dwarf varieties, and they are quite juicy. At full ripeness, the fruits take on a nearly translucent appearance of glowing red with meaty, soft flesh. Vilma is very easy to grow.
Totem Tomato (Dwarf)
Totem Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an early maturing plant that produces heavy yields of bright red cherry tomatoes. They are very sweet and flavorful. Perfect fresh eating right off the vine or in salads. This dwarf plant is suitable for container gardening, patios, hanging baskets, windowsill gardens, or small gardens where space is very limited. It is an excellent choice for home gardens. Determinate.
